From earliest times, Christians made pilgrimage to the Holy Land to visit the places Jesus Christ walked and the places where significant events took place in his life, most notably the path he took on that first Good Friday. The pilgrims would process this route, stopping along the way for prayer and meditation at traditional places where events occurred (stations). For those unable to make this pilgrimage in later years, the custom evolved of setting up replicas of different incidents along the "Way of Sorrow." Centuries later, these devotions were "codified," restricted to fourteen and set up in churches. Meant as primarily a personal devotion, it is customary in Lent especially for Christians to make the stations in community worship using common readings and prayers as part of the meditation. These sketches and drawings representing the Stations of the Cross, are a work in process begun in response to a need at Christ Church, Hamilton, MA for a set of Stations to go in the beautiful contemporary church nave.
